Note on the Text
âBars Fightâ is a ballad composed by Lucy Terry Prince (c.1730â1821), which tells the tale of an ambush by Native Americans on two families in 1746 in a meadow near Deerfield, Massachusetts, known as âthe Barsâ. The poem, constituting the oldest known work by an African-American author, was passed on orally until it was recorded in Josiah Gilbert Hollandâs History of Western Massachusetts in 1855. In some instances, spelling, punctuation and grammar have been silently corrected to make the text more appealing to the modern reader.
